.farms will probably not make the leap into the DNS

Postby Research » Thu 29. Aug 2024, 18:30

Unstoppable Domains has launched another Web3 domain, .farms. In contrast to other domain extensions that Unstoppable Domains has launched on the market, there has been no announcement to date that .farms will be applying to ICANN for allocation to the classic Domain Name System. Domain blogger Kevin Murphy now points out that an application for .farms would be inadmissible according to the current status of the applicant manual. In this manual, ICANN is to be instructed to reject applications for plural and singular variants of generic top level domains that have already been introduced. With the .farm extension managed by Identity Digital, there is already a singular variant of .farms. ICANN's scope of review would only include that the desired character string is a singular or plural variant of an existing gTLD in the same language and that this is confirmed in a dictionary; it can be assumed that Identity Digital would provide this information promptly in the event of an application for .farms. Anyone currently registering a domain under .farms, which was previously only usable on Web3 anyway, must therefore expect not to be able to build a bridge to Web2.
