ICANN launches a webinar series for Europe. The first seminar entitled ‘Identity Verification - Three Approaches’ will take place online on 28 August 2024. Three internet service providers will present their methods for identity verification.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is launching a new webinar series for Europe, which will cover topics of particular relevance to the European domain industry. The first webinar is entitled ‘Identity Verification - Three Approaches’ and will take place on 28 August 2024 at 14:00. The background to the topic is the implementation of the second Network and Information Security Directive (NIS2 Directive) in the individual European countries. The EU member states must have transposed the directive into national regulations by October 2024. It is already clear that not all member states, including Germany, will manage this. NIS2 obliges member states to collect and maintain accurate and complete domain registration data in a dedicated database with due diligence in accordance with EU data protection law with regard to personal data. The domain holders whose data is collected must be properly identified.

For this webinar, ICANN has invited three different providers to give an overview of how they handle identity verification: the Estonian Internet Foundation, operator of the Estonian country code extension (.ee), the Swedish ID verification service provider Truid and the Swedish ccTLD registrar and web hosting provider Loopia. The speakers will be Timo Võhmar, Head of Business and IT Development at the Estonian Internet Foundation, Erik Nordlund, Head of Technology at Truid and Daniel Överfjord, Product Manager at Loopia.

The ICANN webinar ‘Identity Verification - Three Approaches’ will take place online on 28 August 2024 at 14:00. Participation is free of charge after registration via Zoom. Another webinar is planned for 23 October 2024 under the title ‘Blocking Ads and Trackers at the Domain Level’.
